I'm losing my faith

Doubt is not the opposite of faith. It is the beginning of honest faith.

If you are doubting, you are taking your faith seriously enough to question it.

The Church is not afraid of your questions

The desert fathers had doubt. The Psalms are full of doubt. 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?' was not asked by a pagan โ€” it was prayed by the Son of God on the Cross. Your doubt is not outside of Christianity. It is inside it. The Ethiopian Orthodox tradition has survived centuries of theological pressure, empire, invasion, and isolation precisely because its foundation is not feelings but sacrament, tradition, and the living body of the Church.

The difference between doubt and disbelief

Doubt says: I want to believe but I cannot see clearly right now. Disbelief says: I have decided not to believe. One is a prayer. The other is a conclusion. If you are doubting, you have not concluded โ€” you are still searching. That is exactly where God meets people. The father in the Gospels said 'I believe; help my unbelief.' That one sentence contains the whole honest spiritual life. You are allowed to pray it too.

What to do in a season of doubt

Don't stop the physical practice. Keep fasting, keep attending liturgy, keep saying the prayers even if they feel empty. The Church's sacramental life is not dependent on your feelings in the moment. Faith is a muscle. You exercise it even when you are sore. The structure of the Church โ€” Liturgy, fasting calendar, saints' days, the Psalter โ€” exists precisely so that you have something to hold onto when the feeling disappears. Hold onto the structure while the feeling returns.

Scripture

โ€œImmediately the father of the child cried out and said, 'I believe; help my unbelief!'โ€

โ€” Mark 9:24

Sit with this

What specific thing are you struggling to believe? Name it โ€” don't hide it in vague language.

Prayer

God, if You are real, meet me here. I am not sure what I believe right now. But I am here. And I am asking. If this is enough โ€” take it. I am not pretending to have more than this. But I am not walking away. Amen.
