Holy Communion
A reverent preparation journey for receiving the Holy Body and Blood of Christ in the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church. Not a checklist to skim, but a space to be sobered, instructed, and drawn nearer.
Approach Worthily
“Let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.”
1 Corinthians 11:28
Preparation Principle
The Mystery Demands Beauty, Stillness, and Truth
Holy Communion should not feel like an information page. It should feel like entering a holy threshold: instruction, self-examination, repentance, reverence, and finally the courage to approach Christ rightly.
Fear of God
Receive with trembling reverence, not routine.
Repentance
Come through confession, contrition, and healing.
Union with Christ
The goal is not ceremony only, but true communion.
Stage 1: The Mystery
Stage 1: The Mystery
The Mystery
Holy Communion is not a symbol only. In the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, it is the true Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, given for the life of the faithful and for union with Him.
The believer does not come to a mere remembrance, but to the Holy Mystery itself. Therefore Holy Communion is approached with reverence, repentance, and faith.
“Whoever eats My Flesh and drinks My Blood has eternal life and I will raise him up at the last day.”John 6:54
“Let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.”1 Corinthians 11:23-29
Final Goal
“I understand now… I want to prepare… I want to receive Christ.”
Approach the Holy Mystery with fear of God, faith, repentance, prayer, and obedience to the counsel of your Confession Father.

What to do today
Schedule your next Communion
Set a date. Tell your spiritual father. Make it intentional — do not let it remain a vague intention.
Keep the daily rhythm
Morning prayer, evening prayer, the sign of the cross. The rhythm is itself a form of preparation.
Read Psalm 51 or 91
Let the Word begin preparing the soil of your heart before the season of preparation arrives.
