The Feast of Archangels Ura'el
The feast of Saint Ura'el, one of the Seven Archangels appointed in the Covenant of Heaven, is commemorated in our Holy Church:
On Tir 22, the day associated with the Feast of His House of Liturgy and the revelation of wisdom to the Prophet Ezra Sutuel And with great joy on Hamle 22, as a major feast throughout the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church
✍🏾 Meaning and Role of Saint Ura'el
The name Ura'el means “Light of God” or “Lord of Light.”
From the creation of the world, Saint Uriel was appointed over lightning and thunder, manifesting the power and judgment of God.
👉🏾Saint Ura'el is known as a helper in times of trouble, a guide in darkness, and a protector of God’s faithful people.
The Archangel Saint Ura'el, who is a helper in times of trouble, has shown great favor to the kings of our country throughout the centuries. During the reign of Emperor Constantine II, Saint Ura'el guided the nation through his prayers and did not depart from it until the end of the king’s reign.
The king was a pious ruler who deeply loved the Mother of God, the Holy Virgin Mary. Because of his faith and devotion, he was able to govern Ethiopia according to true Orthodox belief and righteousness.
✍🏾 This king brought holy icons of Our Lady, painted by Saint Luke the Evangelist, from Jerusalem.
👉🏾 One of these holy icons was placed by Saint Uriel in a place called Jebla in Gojjam, a land sanctified by the blood of our Lord.
👉🏾 The second icon was placed at Debre Werk.
👉🏾 The third icon was placed in a lake, preserved by divine protection.
👉🏾The icon of Saint Ura’el, painted by Saint John the Evangelist, was placed with great honor in a golden tabernacle within the city.
👉🏾The red robe of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was placed in the royal chapel of the Ambasle region, a place that Saint Ura’el sanctified with the blood of our Lord. Because this chapel surpassed all others in holiness and glory, it was given the name Debre Kerbe.
✍🏾 During his reign, King Zera Yacob also built a church in the name of Saint Ura’el in Debre Birhan, in addition to the many churches he established in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Virgin Mary. He did this so that the name of the Archangel might be proclaimed and his feasts properly celebrated in the Church.
✍🏾 When King Zera Yacob learned that Muslims attempted to seize sacred treasures, and that after failing they arrested Abba Michael, the Archbishop of Alexandria, and burned churches in Egypt, the king rose in defense of the faith. He went to Egypt and fought against the persecutors of the Church, standing firm for Orthodox belief through the intercession of Our Lady Mary and Saint Ura’el.
✍🏾With the help of Our Lady, the Holy Virgin Mary, and through the intercession of Saint Ura’el, the king was strengthened and victorious over his enemies. The king of the Muslims, Ahmed, and the noble warrior of Adal and Tiltal, Bedlayn, were defeated. Through this victory, Abba Michael, the Archbishop of Alexandria, was released from imprisonment and brought safely to Ethiopia, by the will of our Lord Jesus Christ.
✍🏾The king also raised and placed the Holy Cross in the building at Debre Kerbe, which had been constructed earlier by his father, King David II, thus restoring its glory and sanctity.
✍🏾 After this, King Zera Yacob commanded Queen Eleni to build a church in the name of Our Lady, the Holy Virgin Mary. When the Divine Liturgy was completed, our Lord appeared to them and blessed the church with the blood that flowed from His side when He was crucified on Calvary. Through this divine revelation, Saint Ura’el consecrated the church, sealing it with holiness.
