👉🏾👉🏾👉🏾(#Holy #Liturgy )The #Meaning of the #Declarations During the #holy #Liturgy
(Part 3)
Dear followers of the Orthodox teachings on John's Repentance website .we greet you with the peace of the Lord. Today, based on the topic mentioned above, we present to you the following important lesson. We encourage everyone to read it carefully and learn from it.
✍🏾"Ele tnebru tens'u”
(“Stand up, you who are sitting”)
Meaning:
✍🏾This does not mean that everyone was physically sitting. Except for:The sick,The elderly.
All others are expected to stand during the Divine Liturgy.
✍🏾Spiritually, this declaration means:
👉🏾Rise from the bed of forgetfulness with vigilance
👉🏾Rise from the bed of sin with repentance and sincerity
👉🏾Stand before God with reverence, alertness, and prayer.
👉🏾 It is not fitting to sit in carelessness when the glory, praise, and worship of God are being proclaimed.
“Let us understand”
When the deacon proclaims, “Let us understand”,
he is calling the faithful to spiritual awareness.
This means:
Let us examine where we are and how we are standing
Are we standing before God with reverence, or are we distracted by carnal and worldly thoughts?
Are we united with:
The Virgin Mary
The holy angels
The righteous and the martyrs — or are our minds wandering elsewhere?
What does it mean to fix our minds on heaven?
👉🏾To focus our thoughts on heavenly realities.
👉🏾To remember that our earthly life is temporary.
👉🏾To understand that while we live on earth, our true Country is heaven.
👉🏾As Saint Paul teaches:
“For our citizenship is in heaven”(Philippians 3:20)Therefore, the congregation responds in agreement, affirming that:
👉🏾"Our minds should truly be set on heavenly things."
✍🏾Why do we say “God, have mercy on us” twelve times?
During the Liturgy, the faithful proclaim “God, have mercy on us” twelve times, often counting with their fingers. This is not without meaning.
The spiritual reasons are:
1. The Holy Trinity
The Gë`ëz letters of the names Father, Son, and Holy Spirit together are twelve.
2.The Twelve Apostles
We ask God for mercy and forgiveness through the intercession of the twelve apostles.
✍🏾Why not more than twelve? Why not less?
The number of the apostles is exactly twelve After Judas Iscariot betrayed the Lord, Apostle Matthias was chosen to restore the number to twelve
(Acts 1:23–26)
That is why it is not more than or less than twelve, but instead shows the ascent and descent.
Thus, the number twelve remains complete and perfect, symbolizing:
👉🏾Apostolic fullness
👉🏾Order
👉🏾Spiritual completeness
Part 4 continues ...
May the name of the Holy God be praised forever and ever in every tongue that He has created, today and always.
May the blessings of God's mother, the virgin, and the cross be upon us.
Amen.
