(Part 47)
Dear followers of the Orthodox teachings on John's Repentance website .we greet you with the peace of the Lord. Today, based on the topic mentioned above, we present to you the following important lesson. We encourage everyone to read it carefully and learn from it.
✍🏾Blessed Are Those Who Know and Do
Blessed are you if you not only know God’s Word but also practice it. Christianity is the imitation of Christ. Our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ humbled Himself and washed the feet of His disciples. He said,
“You also ought to wash one another’s feet.”
He further said,
👉🏾“Blessed are you if you know and do the new commandment, ‘You also ought to wash one another’s feet.’”
He taught His disciples,
“Strengthen your Christian life by serving one another with humility and love.”
Just as He demonstrated humility on Holy Thursday, we too are called to teach humility by washing the feet of the faithful and priests on this sacred day each year.
✍🏾 Holy Thursday – The Day of the Mystery
✍🏾This day is called the Day of the Mystery, because it is the day on which the mystery of the Eucharist was established. Following the teachings of the New Testament, we perform the mystery of repentance and partake in the Eucharist for those purified through true repentance (Matt. 26:26–28).
✍🏾To those who might say, “Lord, we already know this, why do You remind us?” the Lord teaches that knowledge alone is not enough. True greatness comes from knowing and doing.
As the Gospel of Luke says:
✍🏾“And that servant who knew his master’s will and did not prepare himself or do what was pleasing to him will be beaten with many stripes; but he who did not know and did what was worthy of stripes will be beaten with few stripes. For from everyone to whom much is given, much will be required; and from whom much has been entrusted, even more will be required.” (Luke 12:47–48)
Even those who know the Word of God, like the Pharisees, are not great if they do not practice it. But you, who know it and act according to it, are truly blessed.
✍🏾Godliness – The Hope of Our Lives
✍🏾Godliness is the hope and foundation of our Christian life. The apostle Paul wrote to his disciple Timothy:
“Train yourself to be godly. Training the body for the flesh has limited value, but godliness is valuable in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and the life to come. This is a trustworthy saying that everyone should accept. We labor and endure reproach because we have set our hope on the living God, who saves all people, especially those who believe.” (1 Timothy 4:7–10)
✍🏾Paul also teaches that:
“For anyone who says, ‘This life is enough for me,’ godliness is great gain.” (1 Timothy 6:6)
“O man of God, flee from worldly desires; pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness.” (1 Timothy 6:11)
Godliness is not only spiritual profit; it is a guide for holy living and a path to eternal reward.
✍🏾Godliness According to Saint PeterThrough the Holy Spirit, Saint Peter also instructs us to live godly lives:
“Grace and peace be multiplied to you through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and virtue.” (2 Peter 1:2–3)
✍🏾Saint Peter further teaches the practical steps to grow in godliness:
“For this reason, making every effort, add to your faith virtue; knowledge; to knowledge, self-control; to self-control, patience; to patience, godliness; to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.” (2 Peter 1:5–7)
