✍🏾 The Apostle Paul also taught that those born according to the flesh persecute those born according to the Spirit: “But just as then he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also now” (Gal. 4:29). He further instructed the Thessalonians, “In order that no one might be shaken by this suffering, we told you in advance, while we were with you, that we would suffer; and so it happened, and you know” (1 Thess. 3:3-4). Paul emphasized that suffering is part of the path chosen for those who serve God. Indeed, the reward of true service may bring suffering on earth, yet it leads to the crown of life in heaven. Yet how often do we, who serve so little, expect praise, honor, and reward, and become discouraged at the slightest criticism?
✍🏾This beloved apostle, speaking of the joy found in persecution for Christ, says, “Therefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then am I strong” (2 Corinthians 12:10). A reader may wonder how one can rejoice while suffering, being persecuted, and experiencing distress. Physically, it seems impossible. Yet spiritually, suffering becomes a source of glory, and enduring hardships for Christ brings profound honor in the eyes of God.
✍🏾In another teaching, the apostle instructs, “Bless and curse not those who persecute you” (Romans 12:14). This teaching surprises when viewed from a human, physical perspective. Naturally, a person condemns those who persecute him and does not bless them. But in Christianity, since our true adversary is the devil, we are called to pray for those who persecute us rather than condemn them. They, too, are in need of salvation, just as we are.
