When he returned to that place later, he found that the stick had become sweet-smelling wood, and his blood had been pressed out of it, remaining as a testimony to his repentance and ascetic struggle.
Abune Gebre Menfes Qidus endured extreme suffering for the sake of Christ. He fasted, prayed, and suffered bodily pain with patience and humility. Even his blood became a source of blessing, and God glorified his suffering as a testimony of true faith.
He lived in Ethiopia for 262 years and fulfilled his covenant with God for 562 years, according to tradition.
At the end of his earthly life, angels carried him in glory to Jerusalem, where he was released from bodily suffering and laid to rest among the righteous.
