Mission to Ethiopia
After this, the Lord said to him,“Go to Ethiopia, O chosen land, for the sake of the souls who have been saved through you.”
Then Saint Gabriel the Archangel carried Abune Gebre Menfes Qidus to the (Mdire kebd) in a chariot borne by the wind. From there, he was taken to Ziquwala (Debre Kidus). Seeing with a pure heart the sins of the Ethiopian people, he stood by the seashore and began to pray with great sorrow.
After forty days of prayer, an angel appeared to him and said,
“I will bless all those who remember you and who call upon your name.”
He continued in prayer for one hundred years, saying,
“If You do not forgive Ethiopia, I will not depart from this sea.”
After the completion of the hundred years, the Lord said to him,
“Arise. My mercy is upon all of Ethiopia. Through your prayers, I have granted forgiveness. Come forth.”
✍🏾Spiritual Warfare and Victory
After this, Abune Gebre Menfes Qidus was raised from the earth and stood between heaven and earth for seven years, like a pillar of fire, without resting his eyes, persevering in unceasing prayer for the world.
Satan, who never ceases from envy, came against him in the form of a crow and struck him with blindness. After two weeks, Saint Michael and Saint Gabriel descended from heaven and healed him by the power of God.
From there, they returned to Zquwala, where they saw the Holy Trinity resting under the shade of the elders of the temple. The Trinity said to them:
"We have asked you pby the throne of God. Please sending out us , one by one."
As they departed, they saw the Trinity as three in one, and they fell down in awe. But God lifted them up and said:
"Go to Zquwala and defeat your enemies."
They obeyed, arriving like a flash of lightning, and empowered by the seven archangels they destroyed thousands of demons.
✍🏾 His Suffering and Glory
Abba Samuel Zewaldba, Abba Anbese Zehazelo, and Abba Binyam Gibts heard the news of Abune Gebre Menfes Qidus and came to seek him. On the seventh day, he revealed himself to them. When Abune Gebre Menfes Qidus met his companions, he saw that his lions had eaten the lions of other saints. Filled with anger, he rebuked them, saying,
“Is it flesh and blood that the Lord has commanded you to eat, or only the dust beneath my feet?”
By God’s power, the lions regurgitated the other lions they had eaten, restoring them unharmed. After this, his lions spat on the ground in humility, then rose and received his blessing, saying,
“O my Father!”
Immediately, the angels of darkness came to take their soul, and Abune Gebre Menfes Qidus repent and said,
“Is not all this because of me?”
In repentance, he bound his own feet with ropes and hung himself upon a great cliff.then Satan cut the rope, but Saint Michael the Archangel ,Saint Gabriel the Archangel received him and saved him.
Then Abune Gebre Menfes Qidus said,
“Leave me alone.”
He stood by himself and bit a stick with his teeth, and he wept and cried out to God for thirty years. When he said,
“Lord, have mercy on me,”and the Lord replied “My mercy is upon you, and your repentance is accepted.”
he cast the stick away, and four of his teeth remained embedded in the stick.
