✍🏾 The Philistines brought the ark of the LORD into the house of Dagon and set it beside the idol. The next morning, Dagon had fallen on his face before the LORD.
✍🏾 They were astonished, yet they set Dagon back in his place, shut the door, and departed. The following morning, Dagon had fallen on his face again, and both his head and hands were broken. The hand of the LORD was heavy upon the people of Ashdod, and plagues struck them boils, rats, and a great calamity in the city.
✍🏾 The Philistines sent the ark to Ashkelon, saying, “We have taken it away.” The people of Ashkelon were greatly alarmed: “Why have you brought the ark of the God of Israel to kill us and our people?” they asked.
✍🏾 The ark remained with the Philistines for seven months. Their land suffered, plagues spread, and many people perished. Finally, they returned the ark to the house of Aminadab on the hill, where it remained for twenty years.
✍🏾 After twenty years, God delivered the Philistines into the hand of David, and he defeated them. The prophet of the LORD declared, “Arise, O Lord, into your resting place, you and the ark of your sanctuary.” David returned to Israel with the ark of the LORD, rejoicing and singing with great glory. He placed it in a tent that he had prepared for it.
✍🏾The Feast of Hidar Zion is celebrated for several reasons:
1. The prophet Zechariah saw Zion in the form of the seal of the covenant.
2. It is the day Menelik I entered Axum carrying the Ark of Zion.
3. During the reign of Queen Gudit (Yodit), after the Ark was hidden on Lake Zway, it returned to Axum.
4. Between 333–339 A.D., Kings Abraha and Atsbeha built the great church in Axum and consecrated it on this day.
For these sacred events, the Holy Orthodox Tewahedo Church honors the Virgin Mary, the living Ark of Zion, and celebrates the feast with great pomp and devotion. (Medble Tarikh, p. 152)
Part 2 Continues ...
May the name of the Holy God be praised forever and ever in every tongue that He has created, today and always.
May the blessings of God's mother, the virgin, and the cross be upon us.
Amen.
