✍🏾Their Nature
The nature of the holy angels is subtle and spiritual. They are spirits, not physical beings.
They cannot be touched or seen with bodily eyes, they have no flesh and bones, they do not marry, and they are not given in marriage, meaning they have no natural power to reproduce.(Luke 24:39, Matthew 22:30)
Teachings of the Church Scholars About the Nature of Angels
The scholars of the Church have handed down two explanations regarding the nature of the angels:
1.Created from wind and fire
This view teaches that angels were created from a spiritual and fiery nature.
Its basis is Psalm 103:4:
“He makes His angels spirits, and His ministers a flame of fire.”
According to this understanding, angels are described as spiritual beings with a fiery, luminous nature, fitting their role as God’s servants and messengers.
2. “Unsearchable nature” (A nature known only to God)
Another teaching of the Church Fathers states that the nature of angels is mysterious and cannot be fully described, for it is known only to God.
Saint Epiphanius of Cyprus, in his book Aximaros, argues that if angels were simply made of wind and fire, then death would have power over them, since these elements belong to the created world. He notes that even Adam, while in the flesh, triumphed over death by God’s grace.
Therefore, Epiphanius teaches that the angels’ nature is not of earthly or elemental substance, but from a hidden nature known only to God.
As he writes:“No one knows what the nature of angels is, except God alone.”
He also teaches that God created the angels on Sunday and established them in three heavenly ranks:Ior, Rama, and Erer (as recorded in Aximaros).
May the name of the Holy God be praised forever and ever in every tongue that He has created, today and always.
May the blessings of God's mother, the virgin, and the cross be upon us.
Amen.
