✍🏾The Canaanite Woman
A Canaanite woman came to the Lord Jesus, pleading for her demon-possessed daughter:
“Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.” (Matthew 15:22–28)
Even the disciples interceded on her behalf, urging the Lord to help her. This passage highlights both personal faith and communal intercession.
✍🏾Jewish Elders Intercede for the Centurion
The elders of the Jews interceded with Jesus on behalf of a centurion whose son was sick:
“When he heard about Jesus, he sent to Him the elders of the Jews, begging Him to come and heal his servant. And when they came to Jesus, they urged Him earnestly, saying, ‘He is worthy for this to be done for him, for he loves our nation, and he himself built us a synagogue.’” (Luke 7:2–5)
✍🏾The Virgin Mary Intercedes at Cana
At the wedding in Cana, Mary interceded with Jesus for the hosts when the wine ran out:
“The wine has run out.” (John 2:3)
Through her request, Jesus performed His first miracle, turning water into wine. This shows the power of humble and faithful intercession.
✍🏾The Holy Spirit Intercedes for Believers
The Apostle Paul teaches that the Spirit of God intercedes on behalf of the saints:
“The Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings that cannot be uttered. And He who searches the hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” (Romans 8:26–27)
The Holy Spirit guides our prayers, teaching us to pray according to God’s will and helping us to pray persistently and rightly.
✍🏾Prayer in the Spirit
Jude exhorts believers to pray continually in the Spirit, maintaining the love of God and awaiting His mercy:
“But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.” (Jude 20–21)
✍🏾A Christian’s Responsibility
While living on earth, a Christian should pray for:
Oneself
The Church
All the saints
Authorities and rulers
The nation and all people
As the Scriptures command:
“I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in authority.” (1 Timothy 2:1–2)
May the name of the Holy God be praised forever and ever in every tongue that He has created, today and always.
May the blessings of God's mother, the virgin, and the cross be upon us.
Amen.
