The Spiritual Meaning
This event was given to us by our holy fathers as an image and prophecy of the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.
👉🏾The land of Arwe (the serpent) represents the dominion of the devil.
👉🏾The fiery serpent represents the Lord Jesus Christ.
👉🏾Just as there was poison in the serpent of the wilderness, there is sin in the devil.
👉🏾But in the fiery serpent that Moses lifted up, there was no poison—just as in our Lord there was no sin.
👉🏾The Lord Jesus Christ was crucified in the likeness of sinful flesh (Romans 8:3), though He Himself was without sin. In this way, the fiery serpent on the pole became a symbol of Christ lifted up on the Cross for the salvation of the world.
He fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah 53:12:
“He was numbered with the transgressors.”
Our Lord knew the parable and its meaning, and He revealed it to us, saying,
“As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:14–15).
✍🏾The Crucifixion of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ
When Pilate said to the Jews, “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” they replied, “Release Barabbas for us, but crucify Jesus who is called Christ.” Then Pilate declared before them, “I am innocent of the blood of this righteous man.” But the people answered, “His blood be upon us and upon our children.” So Pilate released Barabbas and delivered our Lord to be crucified (Matthew 27:23–26).
✍🏾The Crown of Thorns and the Curse of Adam
As recorded by the holy Father Yohannes Afework, when Christ was brought before the people, the archangels stood before Him with fear and trembling, saying,
“He who forgives sins is now judged among the princes.”
At the same time, the people of Israel condemned Christ, declaring,
“He must be crucified.” (John 19:2).
By wearing the crown of thorns, our Lord removed the curse that came upon Adam, when God said,
“The earth will bring forth thorns and thistles for you” (Genesis 3:18).
Through His suffering, He took upon Himself the curse of sin and restored humanity to blessing.
✍🏾The Signs at the Crucifixion
On Megabit 27, when our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ was crucified, the Creator of heaven and earth was lifted up upon the Cross. At that moment:
The sun was darkened,
The moon became as blood,
The stars fell from heaven,
The veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom,
The earth shook and the rocks were split,
The graves were opened, and many of the righteous rose from the dead (Matthew 27:45–52).
All creation trembled, for the Lord of glory, the One who formed Adam with His own hands, was crucified for the salvation of mankind.
As Father Yohannes Afework beautifully writes,
“The hands that created Adam were nailed to the Cross;
woe to the feet that walked in Paradise,
and woe to the feet that walked upon the earth.”
Through His holy Passion, He destroyed death by death and brought light to those who sat in darkness.
