👉🏽👉🏽👉🏽 #What Does #Negere Mariam Mean?
Dear followers of the Orthodox teachings ,we greet you with the peace and blessing of God. Today, based on the above-mentioned topic, we have prepared this important teaching and encourage you to read and learn from it with devotion
✍🏾The Meaning of “Negere Mariam”
The phrase Negere Mariam (ነገረ ማርያም) is derived from two words:
👉🏾 Negere (ነገረ) — meaning “to speak,” “to declare,” or “to reveal.” It refers to a divine revelation or a sacred teaching.
👉🏾 Mariam (ማርያም) — the name of our Holy Mother, the Virgin Mary.
Therefore, Negere Mariam means “The Revelation (or Story) of Mary.” It is a spiritual teaching through which we learn the mystery that God willingly revealed to humankind through our Mother, the Holy Virgin Mary.
The teaching concerning our Lady, the Holy Virgin Mary, is vast and profound. It cannot be contained within one message, Just as it is impossible to measure or finish the Nile River with a spoon, it is also impossible to complete the teaching about our Holy Mother, the Virgin Mary. Therefore, in this lesson, we will highlight only three main points:
✍🏾The Genealogy of the Holy Virgin Mary
God is holy itself, and every person, place, or thing in which He dwells becomes holy.
Our Lady, the Holy Virgin Mary, is called holy because she was found worthy to be the dwelling place of God. She is counted among the saints whom God made pure, and therefore, she is rightfully called Holy Mary
✍🏾The Meaning of the Name “Mary”
The name Mary is believed to be derived from the Hebrew word Mariham, which means “the mother of many.”
Just as Abraham means “the father of many nations” (Genesis 17:5), so also Mary is “the mother of many,” for through her, all who believe in Christ become children of God.
In the teachings of our Church Fathers, the name Mary has several deep meanings:
a. The Way to the Kingdom of Heaven
Mary is called the Way to the Kingdom of Heaven because through her, the Savior of the world was born. All the descendants of Adam were reconciled and returned to their former glory through Jesus Christ, who took flesh and blood from her. Without faith in her intercession, it is impossible to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
b. Grace and Wealth
Our Lady’s parents were once despised by people because of their barrenness, yet her birth brought them honor, grace, and joy. In the fullness of time, she became the grace and wealth of all believers who recognize her intercession and believe in her promise.
As the Lord said on the Cross, “Behold your mother” (John 19:27), she became the spiritual mother of all the faithful.Abba Hiriakos praises her in the Holy Liturgy, saying:
“When Adam was expelled from Paradise, you were his hope.”
Through her, Adam, who was separated from God’s grace and subjected to the devil, regained grace and became the treasure of the Holy Spirit.
c. Perfect in Body and Soul
Since God is perfect in His divine nature, He chose the Virgin Mary in His divine wisdom to be the vessel of the Incarnation. Therefore, He made her perfect pure in body and perfect in soul to become the Mother of the Word made flesh.
d. Above All Creatures and Below the Creator
God placed the Virgin Mary above all angels and saints. The angels were exalted by grace, but Mary was exalted not only by grace and mercy, but also because God the Son took flesh, blood, and soul from her.
That is why the Archangel Gabriel said,
“Blessed are you among women” (Luke 1:28).
Hence, the Virgin Mary is greater than all created beings, standing above all creatures yet beneath the Creator.
e. The Mother of Many
As a household has a mother and father, all Christians who believe in Christ have the Virgin Mary as their spiritual Mother. Her Son Emmanuel is the Head of the household of believers, and she is the Mother who nurtures all who follow Him.
