The Humility of Saint Paul the Apostle
Saint Paul, the apostle and chosen vessel of God, was filled with divine wisdom and revelation. Yet, despite the greatness of his calling, he never glorified himself. Instead, he humbled his heart before God and men.
an apostle, Saint Paul humbled himself, saying,
“Last of all, He appeared to me also, as to one born out of due time.” (1 Corinthians 15:8)
Though he was chosen and honored by God, he regarded himself as the least of the apostles and unworthy of such grace. His heart was clothed with humility, and his words reflected the meekness of Christ.
He also wrote,
"Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you"(2 Corinthians 10:1)
“To this very hour we both hunger and thirst, we are poorly clothed, beaten, and homeless. We labor, working with our own hands. When we are reviled, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure; when we are slandered, we entreat. We have become as the refuse of the world, the offscouring of all things until now.” (1 Corinthians 4:11–13)
This shows that true apostleship is not found in outward glory or comfort but in patient endurance, meekness, and humility.
Saint Paul also revealed how the Lord kept him humble, saying:
“I will not boast, except in my weaknesses. Even if I should wish to boast, I would not be a fool, for I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me. And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me a messenger of Satan to buffet me lest I be exalted above measure.” (2 Corinthians 12:5–7)
Through this, Saint Paul teaches us that even the most blessed servants of God must remain humble, remembering that all spiritual gifts come from Him.
In his humility, Saint Paul became a model for all who desire to serve God faithfully showing that to be great in the Kingdom of Heaven is to be lowly in heart.
