The Humility of Nicodemus: A Teacher Who Learned from Christ
Among the scholars and leaders of Israel, Nicodemus stands out as an example of humility in the midst of pride. He was not only a Pharisee but also a ruler of the Jews, a teacher of the Torah, and a learned scholar. Many of his peers, though entrusted with great spiritual authority, became proud, forgetting that their knowledge and position were gifts from God. They often acted self-righteously, condemning others while seeking honor for themselves.
āš¾When Jesus Christ, the true High Priest and the Word made flesh, came to reveal divine truth, the majority of the Jewish leaders rejected Him. His humility His gentle manner, His servanthood, and His lowly life exposed their pride, stirring envy and hostility. Many hardened their hearts, refusing to hear the teachings of the Savior, despising Him for His meekness and simplicity.
āš¾ Yet Nicodemus approached the Lord in humility. He did not let pride blind him. Unlike other scholars, he sought understanding and truth. The Lord, recognizing his humble heart, revealed to Nicodemus the mystery of rebirth and baptism, teaching him the secret of eternal life through the Spirit a lesson that continues to guide believers to this day. (John 3:1ā14)
āš¾ Christ Himself contrasted the humility of Nicodemus with the hypocrisy of the Pharisees, warning that true righteousness surpasses the outward displays of the scribes and teachers. (Matthew 5:20; Matthew 16:6) In receiving the teachings of Christ with humility, Nicodemus became a model of a learner whose heart was open to divine truth.
