The Enshrinement at Geshen Maryam
✍🏾At Geshen, a great temple was built, and the relics were placed with honor:
the red robe worn by Christ on Good Friday,
The cup ,of bitterness that He drank.
the icon of His Holy Head painted by St. John,
the icon of Our Lady painted by St. Luke,
the bones of saints,
and relics from Jerusalem, Rome, Egypt, and beyond.
✍🏾On Meskerem 21, 1440 A.D., the Cross was enthroned at Geshen, and the church was consecrated. Our Lord Himself appeared and declared: “This place shall be Jerusalem, where I was born, Golgotha where I was crucified, and the Tomb where I was buried. My goodness shall visit all who come here, and My mercy shall never depart from them.”
Thus Geshen became for Ethiopia a second Jerusalem, a living witness to the Cross.
The Legacy of Zera Yacob
✍🏾Emperor Zera Yacob ordered the building of a church in honor of the Holy Virgin Mary beside the church of God the Father. He inscribed in the Book of Tefut blessings for all who dwell near Geshen, promising protection and divine favor. Kings, bishops, and nobles enriched the monastery with gifts of books, vessels, and crosses, so that it became a treasury of faith and culture for all Ethiopia.
The Annual Feast of Meskerem 21
✍🏾To this day, on Meskerem 21, the faithful of Ethiopia gathers at Geshen Maryam to honor the enthronement of the Cross and to receive blessing. On that holy mountain the faithful tastes the mercy of Christ who sanctified it with His promise.
Conclusion
✍🏾Beloved, Geshen Maryam is a sign of God’s love for Ethiopia. The Lord who was crucified on Golgotha has set a new Golgotha in our midst, so that we too may draw near to His Cross. The story of Geshen teaches us that God chooses and sanctifies places, for the salvation of His people.
Let us therefore rejoice in the mystery of the Cross enthroned in Geshen, and may the mercy of Christ who appeared there make our hearts also into His Jerusalem, His Calvary, His dwelling place. Amen.
May the name of the Holy God be praised forever and ever in every tongue that He has created, today and always.
May the blessings of God's mother, the virgin, and the cross be upon us.
Amen.
