His son, Emperor Zera Yacob, was not without sign, for again the vision was repeated to him: “Put My Cross on cross place .” Desiring to fulfill the mystery, he searched through the land until he found a place shaped like the very Cross of Calvary, where Christ’s right hand had rested. There, on Meskerem 21, 1446, he placed the Cross at Geshen Amba, the holy mountain where today stands Debre Kerbe Mariam, the monastery of the Lord.
Geshen, that towering rock in Wollo Province, Ambasel, has but a single entrance, as though heaven itself had sealed it for sanctity. Through the ages it has borne many names:
From the reign of Emperor Dilna-ad (866 AD) until the 11th century, it was called Debre Kerbe.
In the 11th century, when Emperor Lalibela carved a church named "Egziabher ab" upon that mountain it named "Debre Egziabher", after that it was renamed Debre Negesit.
In 1446, when Zer-a Yacob placed the Cross there, the old name returned: Debre Kerbe.
The people, seeing the Emperor “carry his Cross” there, gave it the name Geshen, from the Ge’ez “Gese” or the Amharic “Gesegese,”
Thus the name Geshen endures even to this day, “The book by Merigeta Yemane Birhan Addise, which records the history of the Geshen Debre Kerbe Monastery, explains in detail how the area received its name.”a sign that the Cross has indeed been carried into Ethiopia, not by man’s will alone but by God’s providence.
Conclusion
Therefore, let us not think of the Cross as a distant memory, but as our daily life. It is the power of God for our salvation, the sign of our deliverance, the lamp in our darkness, the staff of our pilgrimage, the crown of the Church, the terror of demons, the consolation of the faithful, and the glory of Christ Himself.
Part 3 Continues...
May the name of the Holy God be praised forever and ever in every tongue that He has created, today and always.
May the blessings of God's mother, the virgin, and the cross be upon us.
Amen.
