The Revelation of the Cross
Thus it was done. With prayer and reverence the demera was kindled. The fire blazed, and the smoke rose heavenward like the prayers of the saints. Then, bowing down from the sky, the smoke stretched forth its hand, as it were, and rested upon the place where the Cross was buried. At this, the words of Saint Yared resounded in truth: “The incense rose up; the smoke bowed to the ground; the wooden cross that the Jews buried at Golgotha was found today.”
Queen Eleni began her labor on Meskerem 17, and by God’s providence, on the tenth day of Megabit, the Cross was uncovered. From that moment, the world rejoiced. For this reason, every year on the eve of Meskerem 16, the faithful light torches and pile wood into great pyres, re-enacting that holy revelation. This is the Demera: the fire that marks the path to the Cross, the smoke that witnesses to God’s guidance, the flame that burns away doubt and leads us to the cross of life.
This feast, Demera Beal, is kept in every town and village, with crosses raised .Believers gather in procession, chanting the ancient hymns such as "Eyoha Abebaye Meskerem Tebaye" , their voices mingling with the crackling fire and the fragrance of incense. Even in Addis Ababa, at the great Meskel Square, the celebration fills the eyes of the world with awe. Pilgrims and tourists alike come to witness, though not all understand the mystery. Some celebrate with pure hearts, others in ways estranged from the sacred meaning. Yet the Cross itself endures, drawing friend and foe alike to stand in its shadow.
For the Cross is triumph. Though enemies of the Cross persist, they cannot quench the flame of this feast, nor silence the praise that rises from Ethiopia to the ends of the earth.
Conclusion
Therefore, beloved, when we keep the Feast of the Cross and the Demera, let us not regard it as mere tradition or spectacle, but as a living testimony of God’s power. The Cross once hidden beneath refuse now shines with eternal glory. The fire of Demera reminds us that what was lost has been found, what was buried has been raised, and what was despised has become our boast.

May the name of the Holy God be praised forever and ever in every tongue that He has created, today and always.
May the blessings of God's mother, the virgin, and the cross be upon us.
Amen.
