Size and Placement of Icons
The size of icons varies according to purpose: small ones in prayer books, larger ones in churches. Regardless of size, every icon must be treated with dignity, for it represents the one depicted. Disorder in painting such as creating multiple inaccurate images of the same saint leads to confusion and weakens devotion.
The Honor Due to Sacred Icons
Because the image represents the one depicted whether God, the Virgin, or a saint it must be kept with dignity. The faithful stand before icons, praying and presenting petitions, not to wood or paint, but to the heavenly one whose likeness is shown. As the Fathers teach, the honor given to the image passes to the prototype.
Conclusion
Therefore, brethren, let us honor the sacred icons, not as idols but as witnesses. Let us learn from them, be stirred by them, and lift up our hearts through them to the Lord of all. For in honoring the saints, we glorify God who dwelt in them. And in venerating their images, we confess the Incarnation itself that the invisible God became visible for our salvation.
Part 4 Continues ...
May the name of the Holy God be praised forever and ever in every tongue that He has created, today and always.
May the blessings of God's mother, the virgin, and the cross be upon us.
Amen.
