Why the Covenant of Mercy Is Necessary
Why is the covenant of mercy needed? Because where there is sin, there must also be punishment, as seen from Adam. Mankind bears this responsibility, and without God’s mercy, no one could stand.
Therefore, God provided many ways for salvation, one of which is the covenant of mercy. Every covenant of mercy calls us to good works.
There is no covenant without obligation. God promises mercy to:
those who call upon His name,
those who remember the saints,
those who feed the hungry,
those who clothe the naked,
those who welcome the stranger,
those who read and hear the Scriptures,
those who give alms.
To all such, He says: “I will forgive their sins; I will pardon them.”
Thus, the covenant of mercy does not lead us to laziness, but to action. Even if we cannot do the greatest deeds, we can do the smallest, and God, in His compassion, accepts them.
The Greatness of God’s Goodness
The goodness of God surpasses all understanding. Many saints were promised mercy “until the end of time.”
Gabriel the Archangel was chosen to announce the mystery of salvation (Lk. 1:19–26).
Queen Esther overturned the decree of death for her people (Esth. 3:10).
Moses interceded for Israel, saying: “Forgive their sin, but if not, blot me out of Your book” (Ex. 32:32).
In all these, we see that God grants mercy not for the saints alone, but for the whole human race.
The Virgin Mary as the Covenant of Mercy
Above all covenants, the greatest was given to the Virgin Mary. For she is not only chosen, but chosen above all the chosen. She is superior in holiness to every saint.
Therefore, the covenant of mercy given to her is greater than all others. For this reason, she is herself called “The Covenant of Mercy.”
The eyes of every sinner look with hope to her covenant, for in her intercession lies the medicine of salvation, given by her Son for the freedom of mankind.
Conclusion
Beloved brethren, let us remember always the greatness of the Covenant of Mercy. Through it, God calls us to repentance, to good works, and to hope. Let us never despair of salvation, but with faith in Christ and with the intercession of His Mother, let us walk the path of righteousness until the end.
May the name of the Holy God be praised forever and ever in every tongue that He has created, today and always.
May the blessings of God's mother, the virgin, and the cross be upon us.
Amen.
