The Evangelists’ Testimony
Saint Matthew and Saint Mark record that the Lord ascended Tabor on the seventh day after He asked His disciples: “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” Saint Luke writes it was on the eighth day.On this mount He answered, not with words only, but with glory: showing that He is not merely Son of Man, but Son of God, Light of Light, very God of very God.
The Celebration of the Feast
Therefore, when we celebrate Debre Tabor, we do not simply recall an event of the past. We ascend in spirit with Peter, James, and John. We hear the Father’s voice, we behold the Son’s radiance, we receive the Holy Spirit’s descent. We are lifted when fear causes us to fall, for the same Lord who strengthened His trembling disciples strengthens us also.
This is not only a feast of memory but a feast of revelation. The light of Tabor is not extinguished; it shines still in the Church, in the sacraments, in the hearts of the faithful. It is the light that conquers sin, the light that illumines the mind, the light that leads us to the eternal kingdom.
May the name of the Holy God be praised forever and ever in every tongue that He has created, today and always.
May the blessings of God's mother, the virgin, and the cross be upon us.
Amen.
