The Day of Conception
In reverence to the divine will, they refrained from the union of the flesh, knowing that the One who spoke to Adam and Eve to “be fruitful and multiply” could bring forth life without the will of man. They remained in purity for seven days, and on the seventh Nehase 7 Gabriel came once more, this time to Hannah, proclaiming:
“You will give birth to a beautiful creature, more glorious than men, more glorious even than the angels.”
By God’s will, through the word of the angel, the Most Pure Virgin was conceived not as other children are, but in a manner sanctified from the beginning for the mystery of the Incarnation.
The Praise of the Saints
Saint Yared, that holy singer of Ethiopia, declared: “Mary, who is of the seed of Adam, shines like a white pearl in the nature of Adam from the beginning.” In her, God laid the foundation of salvation for Adam and all his children, preparing her with His unsearchable wisdom to be the living temple of His Only-Begotten Son.
Abba Hiriakos too, in the divine liturgy, lifted his voice in praise: “O Virgin, you were not conceived by the lust of sin, but were born under the holy vow of Hannah and Joachim.”
The Celebration of the Church
Thus, the Holy Orthodox Tewahedo Church, remembering this wonder, celebrates the day with splendor, not as a mere historical note, but as the beginning of the mystery of our redemption. For in the womb of Hannah was planted the root from which the Tree of Life would spring, whose fruit is Christ, the Savior of the world.
May the intercession and blessing of the Holy Virgin Mary, conceived this day by the promise of God, be upon us, guide us, and preserve us unto the end.
May the name of the Holy God be praised forever and ever in every tongue that He has created, today and always.
May the blessings of God's mother, the virgin, and the cross be upon us.
Amen.
