The Spiritual Purpose of the Fast
The Fast is not an empty ritual. The prophets themselves foresaw and practiced such seasons of abstinence. The holy Daniel, speaking of his own fasting, said:
"In those days I, Daniel, was mourning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine into my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled" (Dan. 10:2ā3).
Thus the faithful abstain from all meat, dairy, and rich foods, devoting themselves instead to prayer, attending the divine services, and works of repentance. This abstinence purifies the body, subdues the passions, and opens the soul to receive heavenly grace.
Conclusion and Blessing
Therefore, let us not approach this Fast as a burden, but as a ladder to the blessings of heaven. By imitating the faith of the apostles, we honor the Mother of God; by humbling the flesh, we awaken the spirit; by guarding the days of fasting, we prepare for the joy of the Feast.
May the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the never-failing intercession of His holy Mother, preserve us from every evil, keep us steadfast in the Faith, and bring us at last to the eternal feast in the kingdom of God.
May the name of the Holy God be praised forever and ever in every tongue that He has created, today and always.
May the blessings of God's mother, the virgin, and the cross be upon us.
Amen.
