The Holy Trinity: One in Essence, Three in Person
Let us, then, consider this divine mystery which Abraham saw with eyes of faith.
The term “Trinity” (Səllase) in Gəʿəz comes from the verb meaning “to make three”. It teaches us that God is:
One in nature, will, and glory
Three in name, person, and work
The Church calls this doctrine the “Holy and Special Trinity”.
“Holy”, because God is the source of life, goodness, and salvation.
“Special”, because He is three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Just as a mother does not suspect her child’s birth, neither does the Trinity question its own creative will. As a mother bakes bread and feeds her children, the Trinity gives rain and sun and sustains all creation. Therefore, they are called Holy.
In Name: The Inalienable Persons
The Father is not the Son nor the Holy Spirit.
The Son is not the Father nor the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit is not the Father nor the Son.
These names are not interchangeable, for they point to distinct persons, though undivided in substance.
Saint Ignatius of Antioch boldly taught:
“The Father is the Father, the Son is the Son, the Spirit is the Spirit… and they are One.”
These names existed before time, before creation, and are not products of time, for time was created by Them.
As Abune Makarios teaches:
“Time does not govern the Trinity. The Trinity governs time.”
In Personhood: Perfect, Complete, Undivided
According to Abba Abulidis, each person of the Trinity has:
A perfect form
A perfect body
A perfect face
Though invisible and infinite, these anthropomorphic expressions reveal the perfection of their divine personhood.
In Work and Relationship
The divine actions clarify their persons:
The Father begets, but is not begotten.
The Son is begotten, not made.
The Holy Spirit proceeds, not begotten, not created.
Thus, we say:
Father: the Unbegotten
Son: the Begotten
Holy Spirit: the Proceeding One
This eternal relationship is the mystery of the inner life of God. And while we cannot fully comprehend it, the Church teaches us to bow in reverence and believe, especially through the sacrament of baptism, where we are born again in the name of this Holy Trinity.
A Call to Faithful Living
Dear brothers and sisters, this teaching is not a relic of ancient revelation it is a living Word.
If we, like Abraham:
Welcome the stranger
Serve with humility
Honor God in hidden things
Then the Holy Trinity will dwell in our homes, bless our labor, and raise our spirits from death to life.
may the name of the Holy God be praised forever and ever in every tongue that He has created, today and always.
May the blessings of God's mother, the virgin, and the cross be upon us.
Amen.
