The Angel Opened the Tomb, Not for Christ, but for Us
Consider the angel who descended like lightning (Matthew 28:1–6), rolling back the stone and sitting upon it—not to release the risen Lord, but to proclaim to the women, “He is not here. He is risen!” The angel became a preacher, announcing to the faithful what had already occurred.
Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came, hearts burdened with sorrow, asking, “Who will roll away the stone for us?” Yet their concern was silenced by divine action. And the guards, though armed and hardened, shook with fear and fell as dead men before the angelic glory. What power, then, must the Resurrection itself possess?
That None May Doubt the Resurrection
The stone was removed so that the faithful might believe. The linen cloths remained, folded and undisturbed (John 20:7), testifying to a divine departure. The women became the first evangelists of the Resurrection, the first witnesses of the greatest truth ever proclaimed:
“He is risen, just as He said.”
Had the tomb remained shut, scoffers would have abounded. Had the guards not trembled, the testimony might have faltered. But now all creation bears witness: the earth shook, the angels proclaimed, and death itself yielded to the Prince of Life.
Conclusion
O brethren, let us not treat lightly the mystery of the Resurrection. This was not the resuscitation of a man, but the triumph of God over death. He who created life in the beginning renewed it in Himself. By His own will, He entered the grave. By His own power, He rose. And in so doing, He opened the way for all flesh to rise again.
Let every tongue now confess:
Christ is risen from the dead, trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life!
Let us bow and worship, not only the empty tomb but the One who emptied it. Let us rejoice, not merely in the Resurrection, but in Him who is the Resurrection.
May the name of the Holy God be praised forever and ever in every tongue that He has created, today and always.
May the blessings of God's mother, the virgin, and the cross be upon us.
Amen.
