"Be prepared, lest anyone deceive you. Many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ.’ But he who endures to the end will be saved. When the Son of Man comes, all the powers of heaven and earth will be shaken. And then all who have sinned on earth will mourn. With a command, with the voice of the archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet, He will descend from heaven to judge the world."
The Readings and Prophecies of the Day
The Church, in her wisdom, has set forth sacred readings for this day, so that the faithful may reflect upon the coming judgment and prepare their souls accordingly.
From the Epistles, we are reminded:
"We do not want you to be ignorant, brothers, about those who have fallen asleep, so that you may not grieve like others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus." (1 Thessalonians 4:13)
From St. Peter's letter, we receive a warning:
"By the same word, the heavens and the earth that now exist are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. But do not forget this one thing, beloved, that with the Lord, one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day." (2 Peter 3:7-8)
From the Acts of the Apostles, we see how even Paul was falsely accused and stood firm in faith, foreshadowing how we too must stand before unjust judgments in this world.
From the Psalms, we receive the declaration of the Lord’s coming:
"The Lord will come openly, and our God will not be silent; a fire will burn before Him." (Psalm 49:2-3)
And from the Gospel, the prophecy of Christ is made clear:
"Do you see all these things? Truly, I say to you, not one stone will be left here upon another." (Matthew 24:2)
The destruction of the earthly temple is but a shadow of the greater truth—that all things of this world shall pass away, but the Kingdom of God shall endure forever.
The Prayer and Hope of the Faithful
As we reflect upon this solemn and sacred day, let us beseech the Lord with fervent hearts:
May He establish us at His right hand, that we may hear the blessed words:
"Come, you who are blessed by My Father, enter into the joy of your Lord!"
May the name of the Holy God be praised forever and ever in every tongue that He has created, today and always.
May the blessings of God's mother, the virgin, and the cross be upon us.
Amen.
