About #Doubt and the Holy #Sacraments
Question፦ Hello, thank you for the response. A follow up question, can one take part in the sacraments while having doubts or should I focus on praying and making sure I don’t have any doubts before participating in any sacraments?
Answer፦My child, your honesty is commendable, but we must be clear: approaching the Holy Mysteries with unresolved doubt is a grave matter. The Eucharist is not merely a symbol, but the true Body and Blood of our Lord, a sacrament demanding the utmost reverence and a clear conscience.
The Scriptures are unequivocal: "Whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup." (1 Corinthians 11:27-28) These are not words to be taken lightly, child. To partake in this Holy Sacrament while consciously harboring disbelief is to court spiritual peril, inviting judgment rather than grace.
Remember the words of St. John Chrysostom, who thundered from this very land, "Do you not see the royal table? Do you not behold the spiritual banquet? Do you not perceive the King Himself present?" Can you, with doubt clouding your heart, truly stand before the King of Kings in such a state?
Therefore, your path is clear: Before even considering receiving Communion, you must prioritize reconciliation with God through the cleansing power of Confession. Go to your spiritual father, child, and lay bare your doubts without reservation. He, as a shepherd entrusted with your care, will guide you back to the path of righteousness and offer counsel grounded in the wisdom of the Holy Fathers.
Do not allow pride or fear to delay this vital step. The Holy Sacrament is a fire that purifies, but it also has the power to consume if approached unworthily. Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness through sincere repentance and a contrite heart, and all these things will be added to you. (Matthew 6:33)
Remember, my child, we are here for you on this journey. Do not hesitate to share any further anxieties or concerns that burden your heart.
May the name of the Holy God be praised forever and ever in every tongue that He has created, today and always.
May the blessings of God's mother, the virgin, and the cross be upon us. Amen.
