Learning from Creation: A Mirror of Divine Truth
Not only does creation reveal the existence of the Creator, but it also serves as a profound teacher. When we observe the cycles of nature, the growth of plants, the life and death of creatures, we learn spiritual truths. Just as a seed is buried in the ground and rises to new life, so too does man die and rise again in the resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:35-39). Creation becomes, in this way, a mirror of the deeper mysteries of God, teaching us of life, death, and the eternal life to come.
The Origin and Nature of Creation: Seen and Unseen
God created both the visible and invisible realms, the tangible and intangible, by two distinct methods. First, He brought some things into being out of nothing by His own will—light, earth, fire, water, angels, and darkness. These elements, fundamental to all creation, exist because God willed them into being (Hebrews 11:3). Second, He fashioned other creatures from the elements He had already made: animals from the earth, creatures of the sea from the water, and mankind from the dust of the ground. This creative process reveals not only God’s omnipotence but also His wisdom and care in crafting a world fit for human life.
The Benefits of Creation: Leading Us to God
Creation, beloved, exists not to add to God’s glory, for His glory is infinite and perfect. Rather, creation benefits us, His creatures, for it serves as the foundation of Christian education. By observing the world around us, we come to know the existence of the Creator. Creation is the first revelation of God to mankind, even before the Holy Scriptures. It speaks to us of His power, wisdom, and goodness.
Moreover, creation provides for our needs, both physical and spiritual. The food we eat sustains our bodies, while the beauty and order of the world nourish our souls. Even the sacramental life of the Church is rooted in creation, as the bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Christ, feeding us unto eternal life.
The Character of God: Holiness, Power, and Wisdom
Through His creation, God reveals His character. He is holy, almighty, eternal, wise, and creative. His authority is unmatched, for He commands and it is done. His holiness is reflected in the purity and goodness of all that He has made. His wisdom is seen in the order and harmony of the universe, and His power is evident in the sheer act of bringing all things into being.
The Days of Creation: A Divine Work in Three Forms
Finally, let us contemplate the manner in which God created the world. There are three ways by which God brought forth creation. First, there is the silent creation—the elements of flesh, darkness, angels, and the heavens were created in silence, without the need for speech. Second, there is the creation by word—God spoke, and light appeared, days were established, and the foundations of the earth were set. Lastly, there is the active creation—only in the case of man did God not only speak but also work, fashioning man with His own hands from the dust of the earth.
In all these things, beloved, we see the mercy and goodness of our God. May we always give thanks to Him for the gift of creation, for the intercession of the Holy Virgin Mary, the saints, the righteous, and the martyrs, and for the hope of inheriting His eternal glory. Let us live in holiness, as creatures made in His image, reflecting His goodness in all that we do, and praising Him for the wondrous works He has done.
Amen.
May the name of the Holy God be praised forever and ever in every tongue that He has created, today and always.
May the blessings of God's mother, the virgin, and the cross be upon us. Amen.
