Prophets spoke of Bethlehem as a city abundant with water sources, nestled among mountains and thriving with commerce, cultivated by the wise teachings of Jewish scholars. From an early age, Joseph was immersed in the sacred texts of the Torah, laying the foundational stones of his righteous path.
Family Life and Bereavement
As he matured, following the righteous statutes of the Torah, Joseph embraced the covenant of marriage. From this sacred union came forth his children: Jacob, Simeon, Yosa, Judah, and three daughters. Tragedy struck when his beloved wife passed away at the age of 52, leaving him to shoulder the burdens of parenthood alone. She was laid to rest in the ancestral cemetery in Hebron, closing a chapter of familial bliss.
Divine Providence in Choosing a Guardian
At the venerable age of 92, a pivotal moment came upon Joseph. The Holy Virgin Mary, having been consecrated to the temple and nourished by celestial sustenance, needed a guardian as ordained by divine decree. In a ceremony overseen by the priest Zechariah, all the widowed elders of Israel were called to present their staffs. Among these was Joseph, who journeyed from Nazareth to Jerusalem, his heart filled with faith.
The Miraculous Selection
In the sacred confines of the temple, the priest Zechariah placed the collected staffs and prayed fervently. When the time came to distribute the staffs, a divine sign was revealed: Saint Joseph’s staff alone bloomed miraculously, bearing balsam fruit—a symbol of new life and divine selection. Further confirming his chosen role, a white dove descended upon him, and an inscription appeared, decreeing, "O Joseph, protect Mary." This triple sign confirmed his divine appointment as the guardian of the Virgin Mary.
A Life of Service and Exile
Embracing his divine mandate, Saint Joseph, alongside the Holy Virgin and Saint Salome, undertook the arduous journey to Egypt, seeking refuge from persecution. This period of exile marked a profound chapter of faith and providence, symbolizing the protective grace extended over the Holy Family. Upon their return, Joseph devoted himself to the earthly care of Jesus Christ, nurturing the Savior with a father’s love and a guardian’s diligence.

Saint Joseph’s earthly journey concluded at the age of 114, after he had witnessed the growth of Jesus into manhood and the inception of His divine mission. His death was not an end but a passage to eternal communion with the divine, celebrated by the heavenly hosts and marked on earth by the annual feast on August 1, 2024.
