The Seven Times of Prayer (Daily)
(Note: The times written below are in Ethiopian time)
Morning Prayer (Eleven o'clock prayer)
This is the hour when Adam disobeyed God's command; the time when Adam and Eve ate the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and were exiled from Eden. Later, it was the hour when our Lord stood in front of Pilate and was rebuked to make amends for Adam. "In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning, I lay my requests before you and wait expectantly." (Psalm 5:3)
Prayer Three (Three Hour Prayer)
This hour: Adam returned to Paradise after 5500 years of exile. Also, it is the time when our Lady heard the angel Gabriel and conceived the Lord. And the time when the Lord was brought before Pilate and flogged; and it is the time when the Holy Spirit descended on the apostles. "At noon, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And at three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”)" (Mark 15:33-34)
Midday Prayer (Six Hours Prayer)
This is the hour when our Lord drank bitter bile while He was hanged on the cross in Calvary Square; and it was a time when they stripped him of his clothes. "When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom. 'Let's not tear it,' they said to one another. 'Let's decide by lot who will get it.' This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said, 'They divided my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment.' So this is what the soldiers did." (John 19:23-24)
Afternoon prayer (Nine o'clock prayer)
This is the hour when he separated his holy soul from his glorious body by his own authority and spoke seven words while on the cross. "And at nine o'clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, 'Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?' (which means 'My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?')." (Mark 15:34)
Evening prayer (Eleven o'clock prayer)
This hour: It is the time when our Lord's body was taken down from the cross and placed in a tomb. "As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus' body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock." (Matthew 27:57-60)
Bedtime prayer
This is the hour when our Lord taught prayer to the apostles. Also, it is the time when Judas led the Jews to arrest Jesus. (Luke 11:1-4, Matthew 26:47-50)
Midnight prayer
This is the hour when our Lord was born, rose to defeat death, and will come to destroy the world. "At midnight the cry rang out: 'Here's the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!'" (Matthew 25:6)
May the name of the Holy God be praised forever and ever in every language that He has created, today and always.
May the blessings of the Holy Mother of God, the Virgin, and the Cross be upon us. Amen.
